To worship is to give God the worth that is due to God alone. Through our Anglican liturgy and music we open our hearts and minds to God and we encounter the mystery and majesty of God. Through prayer we are saying thank you to God for the good things we have received, saying sorry to God for the times when we have fallen short, asking God for help for ourselves and for other people. There are many forms of prayer, from the formal prayers such as those offered daily in the Cathedral to the individual's encounter with God that has no set form of words. There is also silent prayer and listening: after all a meaningful encounter will involve listening as well as talking.
We are glad to welcome over 300,000 visitors each year. Their offerings are the major part of the Cathedral’s income. But aside from the glory of the building and its many monuments, the main purpose of the Cathedral is worship, and we are unique in having two sung services every day except Saturday.
Above all, it is our prayer that the details of the services listed here might encourage you to come to worship at Saint Patrick's Cathedral and to play your part in an ancient tradition of prayer and music offered to glorify God.
No form of prayer is "wrong", but sometimes we need encouragement and inspiration. The formal prayers offered daily in the Cathedral serve to encourage the worshipper by offering a way of praying together with other people. If you would like to join us in our prayer please visit our visitor information section of the website.
