Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Choristers
Choristers receive a first-class musical training from the Cathedral's staff of professional musicians plus free instrumental tuition through our link with the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama as well as extra vocal tuition with our professional voice coach. The experience of performing to the highest standards every day, and the valuable skills which they acquire of concentration, team-work, self-discipline and self-confidence will benefit them for the rest of their lives.
Choristers are educated at the Cathedral Choir School founded in 1432 by Archbishop Richard Talbot to provide for the education of the choirboys. Originally housed in what is now the robing room of the Cathedral, today it is housed in modern buildings opposite the Cathedral enjoying a prime location in the city centre. The school is a co-educational national school and all the boys are choristers in the Cathedral choir. Girls at the school are often sisters of current choristers and some sing in the Cathedral Girls' Choir.
The school is renowned for the excellence of its teaching staff, and for its friendliness: small classes mean a real focus and care for each child. Saint Patrick's Cathedral Choir School is unique in being the only school of its kind in this country, and it is the oldest school in Ireland.
Many parents assume that their son has to be a musical genius to audition for the choir, but in fact what we are looking for is a boy who enjoys singing, being part of a close-knit team and who, with his parents, will commit himself to a demanding but immensely rewarding schedule. It is always useful if a boy has some experience of a musical instrument but it is by no means essential.
Admission to the choir is via a very simple voice trial which take place throughout the year, music staff from the Cathedral also travel throughout the greater Dublin area conducting trials in many of our National Schools.
