Worship through the ages: “Paddy’s Opera”

  • Thu 23 August

  • 5.30-6.05pm

Worship has been offered daily in Saint Patrick’s for centuries. So come and join us this Heritage Week as we journey through 800 years of worship with 5 services charting the liturgical heritage of this ancient house of prayer.

PADDY’S OPERA Thursday 23rd August at 5.30pm

Our liturgical journey skips ahead to the 19th century when performances by the Cathedral Choir were so popular that people would flock to Saint Patrick’s Cathedral to hear them sing evensong or as it was known locally – ‘Paddy’s Opera’.

However, whilst their singing made them popular with the church going public, it wasn’t so the case with the preachers especially when many of the congregants would leave after the anthem before they’d got to the pulpit to deliver their sermon.
