The Cathedral Choristers have been at the heart of Saint Patrick’s since the school’s foundation in 1432. Since then the choristers have sung daily in the Cathedral and have been educated in the Choir School – the last of its kind in Ireland.
Admission to the choir is via an informal voice trial or audition. Potential choristers will be asked to sing something simple like ‘Twinkle, twinkle little star’ or a prepared piece of their own choice, will be given a few pitching tests from the piano and will be asked to read a short passage – again just something simple like the Lord’s Prayer. There will be a chance for an informal chat with the Master of Choristers about the benefits of a choristership and the commitment involved.
If successful then you would be invited to visit our school, to enjoy a tour around the school and spend time discussing your child’s individual needs with the Principal. Tours are available throughout the year.
In addition to their school education, the choristers (boys and girls) receive vocal and aural training, as well as generous bursaries for instrumental tuition. In addition to singing for the daily services in the Cathedral, concerts, broadcasts, recordings and tours are now also part of their annual programme.
Recently the Choristers have sung live on TV & Radio, performed for the President of Ireland, appeared at venues including the National Concert Hall and released two critically acclaimed CDs.
Chorister training at Saint Patrick’s is centred on teamwork. Singing alongside a team of professional musicians, the Choristers learn the value of their individual contribution within a musical group which performs daily at a high level.
Many parents assume that their child has to be a musical genius to audition. But in fact what we are looking for is someone who enjoys singing, being part of a close-knit team and who, with their parents, will commit themselves to a demanding but yet immensely rewarding schedule.
Why not experience what life is like in the largest Cathedral in Ireland for yourselves? Throughout the year we host a series of open afternoons to provide an opportunity to see what is on offer: you can enjoy a tour around the School, spend time discussing your child’s individual needs with the Principal and your child can spend an afternoon with the Choristers.
