Every year a number of places become available at the Cathedral Choir School for boys and girls to become choristers and join us in the stalls. Something they’ve been doing for nearly 600 years.
A chorister’s musical education is second to none, producing young people who are organised, focused, hard-working, and often with a lifelong love of music, not just choral music.
Becoming a chorister opens up a wealth of opportunities and experiences that will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Not only do they benefit from some of the finest musical tuition available, they perform daily on a par with professional adult musicians. Most choristers spend four or five years in the choir, and it’s definitely hard work but it gives children many useful skills that will never leave them. Choristers often go on to become remarkably successful in a wide variety of fields due to the valuable arts of self-discipline, focus and organisation learnt ‘on the job’.
This year we are inviting children in 2nd and 3rd class, along with their parents, to come to the Cathedral and experience life as chorister for themselves, for an afternoon.
So if your child/grandchild/nephew/niece/student is currently in either 2nd or 3rd class and they enjoy singing/making music then we’ve two more opportunities to come and sing with either the boys or the girls choir.
