The main function of the choir today is the same as it has always been: to adorn the daily offices with hymns, psalms, canticles and anthems.
The choir is made up of choristers, boys and girls, who like their predecessors, are educated at the Cathedral Choir School, along with 12 members of Schola Patriii (the Cathedral’s Senior Girls’ Choir), several Martin & Choral Scholars, and 8 lay vicars choral.
The Choir sings 2 choral services a day during term time (with the exception of Saturdays) the only Cathedral Choir on these Islands still to do so.
In addition to leading the choral worship, the choir regularly gives concerts both at home including performances of Brahms’ Requiem with the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, and away including a performance of Britten’s War Requiem with both the National Symphony Orchestra and RTÉ Concert Orchestra in the National Concert Hall.
The choir tours regularly, whilst many of these trips would be to Cathedrals & Greater Churches on the other side of the pond, including Gloucester, Exeter & Westminster Abbey, the choir has also sung in Paris, as well as Sweden, Denmark and most recently this spring in New York City.
Over the years, the choir has made many commercial recordings, most of which can be purchased from the Cathedral Shop and include the most recently recorded Welcome! Yule: A Chorister’s Christmas released by Regent Records in 2023.
