Marsh’s Library is a historic library founded in 1707. It is the oldest public library in Ireland and one of the few buildings from its era still in use for its original purpose. The beautiful building houses a valuable collection of rare books and manuscripts, and is particularly rich in theology, science, medicine, and history. Visitors come from across the world to admire the original oak shelves and see the cages into which readers were locked to prevent thefts. They are often struck by the comforting smell of the centuries-old leather bindings on the books. If you have an interest in Irish history or literature you will surely want to follow in the footsteps of the Irish writers Jonathan Swift, Bram Stoker, and James Joyce who read in Marsh’s Library.
